Do you want to get fit, look super stylish and help save the ocean and all of its beautiful inhabitants? Thanks to Adidas teaming up with the marine heroes at Parley for the Oceans, now you can.
The duo created a sustainable vegan running shoe back in 2015. It’s called the UltraBOOST and it has been fashioned from recycled/upcycled plastic. Yep, that’s correct. Parley has taken the plastic that might otherwise end up in the Big Blue and given it to Adidas, who has spun it into this sexy, sporty shoe.
Three years on, and there’s two new designs in town – the limited release UltraBOOST Parley and UltraBOOST X, each of which is a product of performance-oriented footwear technology and progressive eco-innovation.
They both feature an energy-return BOOSTTM midsole and 95% Parley Ocean Plastic Prime Knit upper, and every pair sold prevents approximately 11 plastic bottles from entering our oceans.
And it’s already working!!
In June/July 2018, when you used an app called Runtastic during exercise, it tracked every kilometre you run or walk. For each kilometre accumulated, Adidas donated US$1 to support the Parley Ocean School Program (capped at US$1million) which educates and empowers kids to become the next generation of Ocean Guardians. It does this through immersive experiences that highlight the impacts of marine plastic pollution and by giving them tools and inspiration to protect the Ocean’s future, and ours. The great news? It reached its goal of US1million in under three weeks!
And yes, while we know that Adidas does still produce shoes made from suede and leather, it’s heartening to see that such a huge corporation is actually embracing change, where plenty of others do not. There’s still a ways to go, but we believe that every step in the right direction is a step well walked.
Adidas X Parley UltraBOOST, AUD$260, and UltraBOOST X, $300, are available now either online or from all good retailers. For more information: adidas.com.au/parley
