The principles of the vegan message have never been so urgent. Clearly, the biggest threats to planet Earth involve our intensive exploitation of animals and the environment. Yet we can overcome with all things vegan. Here is a vegan beauty take on an emerging trend. Classic, minimal and modern, a look for quarantine and beyond.

2020 – A year that calls for a bold red lip

In this advanced technological age, a look that embraces the natural texture of skin is the surprising plot twist in contemporary beauty. A bold, classic French girl red lip offsets the uncomplicated canvas, framed by textured brows and a sparkling, nude eye palette. But before you throw your foundations and concealers away, note that the skin looks natural, yet perfected, enhanced, and delicately highlighted. The look reads as minimal, but the process is not necessarily basic. Now is the time to nail your skincare routine, brush up on your make-up skills, and bring your look into the Zoom era.

Illuminate your skin – create a ‘skincare glow’

With advanced science based formulas, the latest foundations, illuminators and skincare hybrids, far outperform their clumsy predecessors. This look relies heavily on these sophisticated beauty products to create the most natural looking skin. Not coated or masked, the skin is celebrated yet perfected, looking as though you are wearing skincare, not foundation. Far from passe, the highlighter trend is now a subtle cream illuminator or skin perfector, used liberally, but not with a heavy hand.

Use an illuminating skincare infused primer, perhaps even paired with a cream highlighter, dabbed gently in all the usual places, (but never the tip of your nose), and even over your eyelids. Conceal with precision using a tiny brush to pat a high coverage concealer over spots, and blend by gently tapping around the edges with your fingertip. Cover dark and red areas, using heavier products only where they are needed. Use powder strategically, swept over concealed areas for longevity, and over an oily t-zone, avoiding highlighted areas. Practise restraint!

Frame your canvas – texturise your brows & lashes

In order to enhance your features, eyebrows should be a straighter shape than in past trends, and far more textured and fluffy, rather than darkened and defined. A brow gel can be combed through the brow hairs, gently back and forth, then finished with a brushed up and out motion to give the maximum bushy effect.

Lashes can be treated similarly with a separating and lifting mascara, creating a clean and wide-eyed look. (For a night time variation, a liquid eyeliner along the top lashes, with a classic kitten flick, adds glamour and a sense of occasion to a signature day time look.)

Dial up the contrast & go boldly where others fear to tread

The most dramatic statement in this look, the piece de resistance, is the bold, red lip, a powerful contrast to an otherwise ethereal and restrained approach to your makeup. The effect is breath taking, sophisticated and thoroughly contemporary. (Wearing a carefully applied red lip does wonders for those trying to avoid touching their face!)

For a precise and polished finish, use a neutral lip liner no darker than your lipstick, to outline and enhance your lip shape. Alternatively, a less exacting and sometimes more flattering technique for lip colour, involves using your finger to carefully work the colour into your lips, paying special care to smooth over lines and the corners of your mouth. Reapply in the same manner to build the lip colour to your desired opacity. This method, creates a blurred edge and gives the illusion of fuller lips, whilst avoiding the more high maintenance technique of heavy lipstick with a crisp edge.

On ageing lips, a thick layer of lipstick can be unflattering, yet a bold colour brings life to a sallow face. A satin or matte formula in a blue or orange-based red, depending on your skin-tone, has the right texture and impact to bring balance to your face.

Vegan beauty – a refreshing & uncomplicated look

This success of this look depends on the balance between a natural glowing skin, textured brows and lashes, and a rich red mouth without the distractions of high coverage foundation, fussy eye shadow or highly coloured cheeks. The key is the restrained treatment of the skin, juxtaposed with a sumptuous red pout, creating a modern, well-groomed look that is uncomplicated to the eye. Throw on a chunky knit, and some classic hoop earrings for ultimate style cred.
