Nothing warms our hearts more than seeing designer brands getting behind sustainable fashion. The week has started well with luxury brand Prada announcing a step in the sustainable direction.
When Miuccia Prada took over the reins of the brand in 1978, she oversaw the debut of its iconic nylon backpacks and totes. Forty-odd years on and Miuccia’s 30-year-old son, rally driver Lorenzo Bertelli, who joined the company last year, is thought to be behind the revelation that Prada is moving to a more eco-friendly version of the fabric. In its ‘Re-Nylon’ collection, six of Prada’s classic bags will be created from regenerated nylon, in partnership with sustainable nylon manufacturer Aquafil. The plan is for Prada to be using recycled nylon for all its nylon products by 2021.
The range, for men and women, will feature two back packs, a duffel bag, shoulder bag, bum bag and the flagship tote. To differentiate the range to the naked eye, Prada will be stamping it with an update to their existing logo – the well-known upside down triangle will be changed into a ‘recycling’ arrow.
This isn’t the only good news from Prada in 2019. Earlier this year, Prada group announced, in collaboration with the @FurFreeAlliance, that it will no longer use animal fur in its designs or new products.
