There is one word that has been dominating the conversation in the beauty industry over the last couple of years – CHARCOAL. While it may have been hard for most of us to associate charcoal or to be precise, activated charcoal, with beauty products, let alone apply it on face and hair, their popularity has sky-rocketed. From celebrities through to influencers, everyone seems to be promoting the benefits of skin and hair care products that have activated charcoal as a key ingredient.

So, should you buy charcoal? Should you blacken your face with a not-so-glamorous-looking face pack? As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover and this instance, don’t judge a skin care product by its colour! A baby pink face mask back doesn’t guarantee your skin will glow. In fact, the colour of most beauty care products are created as a marketing ploy to secure their popularity. Just think about all the different kinds of skincare products that promise different ingredients and benefits and yet come in a handful of pastel shades. While a product containing activated charcoal may not be immediately pleasing to your eyes, it definitely works wonders on your skin and hair.

4 big reasons to consider charcoal products?

Detoxify Your Skin – many skin care products only cleanse the surface of your skin. Given the amount of dirt, pollution and harmful toxins you’re exposed to on a daily basis, build up can make your skin appear dull. Enter activated charcoal. Known as a heavy-duty cleanser, it has a high rate of absorption and penetrates deep inside the pores of your skin to pull out the dirt, oils and other harmful toxins.

Balances Oil – as those with oily skin know, it can be a challenge. By removing the surface oil while keeping your skin moisturised at the same time, activated charcoal can help balance out the oil in your skin.

Increase Hair Volume – average oil tends to make your hair look thicker as it attracts dust and dirt but in reality, the volume of your hair doesn’t grow. Shampoo’s can also affect hair volume as they can leave behind harmful chemicals on your scalp. An activated charcoal product is completely natural and won’t harm your hair. Instead, they’re known for promoting hair growth and in increasing the volume.

Soothes Skin Irritations – if you’ve been stung by an insect you know how painful it can be. This is where applying a small coat of an activated charcoal product over the area can immediately help you get rid of irritations. Activated charcoal has for long been used in treating patients suffering from poison-related cases.

OK I’m sold, but where can I buy charcoal products?
If you’re convinced about the benefits of activated charcoal products, the next question is where to buy them. As they’re still niche in terms of market reach, they can be a little harder to find. In most cases, while you aren’t likely to find these products at your nearest retail store, you will find many companies selling directly to customers online. But… before you place an online order for your first activated charcoal eye or face mask, do your homework. There are several sub-standard products that are being sold in the market. To avoid this, look for companies and brands that specialise in activated charcoal products and shop directly from their website. You may spend a few more dollars, but you can be confident of getting quality products.
